Submitting comments on the integrated ICT policy discussion paper today (Friday 30 January 2015) to the Department of Telecommunications and Postal services, ICT industry forum, the South Africa Communications Forum (SACF) has revealed that it is upbeat about prospects for an inclusive and modernised national ICT policy that is capable of enhancing national development in a converged ICT ecosystem.
SACF Chief Executive Officer, Loren Braithwaite-Kabosha indicated that the convergence of ICT over the past decade has seen the coming together of major communication platforms such as broadcasting, telecommunications and online media as their once separate functions overlap, and these developments have posed formidable policy and regulatory challenges.
Kabosha stated that the SACF wishes that the upcoming integrated ICT policy could be focused more on ensuring that critical policy and regulatory areas such as: Infrastructure and Services; ICT Industry growth; The Digital Society, Audio and Audio visual Content services, Institutional Frameworks, Electronics Manufacturing, Postal Services, Skills development are addressed from a convergence perspective.
“Despite the pressing deadline for submission of comments, Kabosha noted that SACF members mostly in the telecommunication, electronic, postal, information technology, electronics and broadcasting industry have worked flat out to contribute towards the creation of a fresh policy geared to improve South Africa’s competitiveness in the ICT industry at a regional and global level,” she added.
